A Slice of Life

For reasons unknown, I elected to wear a blue do-rag (a napkin in its previous life) on my head this afternoon. I had a lot of little girls laughing at me as I went outside, calling "Mwatchena!" ("Looking good!" ...to be taken with a grain of salt). "Ngati mayi wakupemphera ku mzikiti," I responded ("Like a woman praying at the mosque"). Small headscarves, not much larger than this, are the head-covering of preference around here.

I walked past my friend Miss Mwafulirwa, the NAMTAS tailoring tutor. She looked up at me, then pursed her mouth into a smile and shook with quiet laughter. Finally she shook her head and said, "So American today!"
